If you start walking through the woods, what are the chances you will go in a straight line? They are very, very low, unless you are 1) following a marked trail or b) using a compass. Following a marked trail is not always possible (and sometimes not as fun) so a compass is a very useful tool especially if you are a serious hiker heading out on a long journey.
Applying this as a metaphor to life we acknowledge that we are on an unmarked trail. Our life is unique, our time is unique, and the challenges we meet can be quite substantial.
